Pusat Jagaan Jed ~ 17th and 18th day!!!

24th and 25th December 2012

Everything went well for these two days. Nothing much i did on these two day. We have no doctor appointments. We carried out our routine activities. Looking after the patients, prepare food for them and so on.Mr. Raman, Mr. Sunther and I went to grocery shop and market to buy some cooking stuff. On the final day of social service it was Christmas. I wished everyone Merry Christmas. We bought a cake to celebrate with the patients. Dr. Bala came to visit the patients as usual at 4.00 pm. We sang Christmas song and cut the cake with Dr. Bala. All the patients was happy. I get Dr. Bala's signature on the external elective form. He thanked me for my service at the home care and wished me best of luck. After finis our work, I invited Mr. Raman and Mr. Sunther to the nearby restaurant to treat them. They have taught me a lot of things and guide me throughout my days at the home care.  The End !!! :-)

Pusat Jagaan Jed ~ 16th day!!!

20th December 2012

The sixteenth day of my social service. The unforgettable day of my social service at Pusat Jagaan Jed. As usually I went to the home care around 9.00 am. The patients were cleaning the anchovies. Mr. Raman and Mr. Sunther told me something that was really shocking. I thought they were joking with me so I asked them back is it really true. One of the patient in the home care acted violently around 2.30 am. The patient took a fluorescent tube and whacked another roommate of him on the head while he was sleeping. When asked why he did that, he replied, his roommate disturbed him unnecessarily which is not true. The patient also have tried to commit suicide early that morning. He used his towel to choke himself. He was stopped by Mr. Sethu who saw him trying to suicide. Three of his roommate also told that they have seen him trying to choke himself to death using the towel before. The also added he did mention about dying many times since the past four to five days. I was totally shocked to hear this. He is in his early 70's and very weak. How he could have climbed on the table, took the fluorescent tube and whacked his roomate? Mr. Raman have already told all this to Dr. Bala early in the morning. Dr. Bala informed the patient's family about what have happened and decided to send him to Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta, formerly known as Hospital Tanjung Rambutan. After lunch we took him to HBUK. HBUK is the first and biggest psychiatric hospital in Malaysia. Located about 13KM from our home care. It was the first time i went to HBUK. Once reached HBUK, we straight away brought him to the male admission ward. The person at the admission counter told us he cannot admit the patient without a letter from the psychiatric specialist. He asked us to go to the out patient center in HBUK to get our patient checked by doctor. Previously, a psychiatric patient can be admitted in the ward if he willingly wanted to be admitted. But now the rules has been changed. We took the patient to out patient center. After registered his name, we waited for the doctor to attend him in a room. The doctor came and started to ask questions to him regarding the incident that happened early the night. The doctor continued to ask questions to him. He responded slowly to all his questions. He told he is hallucinating things like people dying and he could listen sounds like police siren and so on. He said he is scared of living, he have no appetite to eat, he have stomach pain and wanted to die. When asked about his family, he told that he is unmarried,  he had a sister and she passed away many years back. He also added that he love sex and think a lot about it. After talked with him and confirmed that he did really tried to commit suicide, the doctor gave us the supporting documents and letter to admit him in the ward. Then we took him to the admission ward again. He was attended by another specialist doctor. The doctor again asked the same questions to him to confirm all that he told before is right. And finally he was admitted in the ward.

Pusat Jagaan Jed ~ 14th and 15th day!!!

18th and 19th December 2012

Everything went well on these two days. Two tiring day actually. There were many doctor appointments. On 18th December, there were 10 doctors appointments in total. We brought three patients to the psychiatric clinic for specialist follow up. Many patients were there. It took quite a long time for our turn. While waiting there, for the 1st time i saw what Schizophrenia really is. A patient in his late 40's who came for doctor follow up suddenly started to go out of control. He accused a man who came to hospital to visit his friend as a policeman and said he arrested him in front of his father. The man looked puzzled not knowing what is going on there. He started to shout at the man and attacked him. The nurses and attendant that were around hold him and tried to calm him down. The doctors gave him an injection to make sure he is in control. They brought him to the doctor's room. I have heard schizophrenia patients will be uncontrollable at times and they can't differentiate what is real and not real if they never took medication properly but on that day i saw it happening in front of me. In the evening we brought rest of the patients to get their injection at Klinik Kesihatan Greentown.

On 19th December, we brought 3 patients for blood checkup at Klinik Kesihatan. All the patients need to check their blood cells count and sugar level every six months once. We also brought a patient from the female home care for doctor checkup following her diabetes and blood pressure at Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun.

Pusat Jagaan Jed ~ 12th and 13th day!!!

14th and 17th December 2012

Everything went well. Nothing much i did on these two days. We carried out our routine activities. Looking after the patients, prepare food for them and so on. Mr. Sunther and I went to market to buy fish. There was a family came from Penang to visit a patient. Many patients in the home care are from Penang and KL. Some of their families will come to meet them every month or once every two months but there are also families that have never visited them since the day the sent them here. We also went to Klinik Kesihatan Greentown pharmacy and respiratory clinic of Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun to take the medications for the patients as prescribed by doctor.

Pusat Jagaan Jed ~ 11th day!!!

13th December 2012

Another unpleasant day. I went to home care as usual. No doctor appointments on that day. We stayed at home care chit-chatting with the patients, prepare lunch for them and so on. After took their lunch and medications, all the patients went to their rooms to take rest. Myself with three other workers was sitting at the living room. There came the guy who sells bread for the home care. Mr. Sunther called a patient who is responsible to keep the bread and prepare breakfast every morning. Some of the patients in the home care have been given certain responsibilities of work like help to prepare breakfast, prepare lunch and dinner, do gardening and so on. Mr. Sunther called him many times but he never turn up. After took the breads and kept it in the dry kitchen he went to see what he is doing. The patient was unconscious on his bed. The other patients thought he was sleeping. We tried to give first aid but it never helps. Mr. Sunther called Dr. Bala to inform the situation meanwhile i rush to start the car. We rushed him to the hospital. At the emergency, the medical officers helped us to carry him out from the car as the patient is big in size. He was given treatment at the critical zone and was under observation. The doctor on duty told us they suspected stroke or mild attack but they cannot confirm it, they are waiting for the blood report. We waited 4 hours at the hospital. Mr. Raman who was on night duty on that day came together with Dr. Bala to hospital. Dr. Bala talked with the doctor on duty regarding the patient condition. The doctor said he is fine, all the report is good and suggested to admit him in the ward to observe his health condition for 3 days. Dr. Bala asked to admit him in the psychiatric ward as the patient had a record of abscond from hospital before came to our home care. But the doctor did not accepted the request. Dr. Bala asked to discharge the patient and in case of emergency we will send him to hospital immediately. We discharged the patient and took him back.

Pusat Jagaan Jed ~ 9th and 10th day!!!

11th and 12th December 2012

11th December, it was not a pleasant day. The day started well. Dr. Bala received a call on 10th December from the hospital informing the patient who was admitted due to intense diarrhea can be discharged the next morning. As per Dr. Bala's order Mr. Sunther and I went to hospital. Everything went well from discharging the patient till taking the lift. Once we took the lift the patient had seizures. With the help of nurses and medical officers we took him to the emergency. He was given first aid there. The doctor told the patient had epilepsy. He was admitted in the ward again for further observation. Dr. Bala informed the family about the patients condition. They decided to take him back to Penang for further treatment. On the next day, 12th December, the patients family came down to Ipoh. Mr. Sunther and I went to hospital to meet them and hand over the patients cloths. After consulting the doctor, they arranged an ambulance to bring him back to Penang. We get their signature in the discharge form as a prove that the patient is no more under the home care's responsibility. In the evening, Mr. Sunther and I went to the Perak Secretariat to get the portraits of the King, Sultan and Prime Minister.

Pusat Jagaan Jed ~ 7th and 8th day!!!

3rd and 4th December 2012

Everything went well. It was same as other days. We brought patients to get their injections and doctor follow ups. Went to market, went to pharmacy and so on. Mr. Sunther and I also visited the patient that was admitted on 30th November. His health condition was good. He started to eat well again. Doctor said he had bacterial infection and he is fine. He was discharged on 3rd December. Sadly, the new patient from Penang developed a complication on night of 3rd December. He was having intense diarrhea. Dr. Bala checked him and gave medication to stop the diarrhea but his condition was getting worse. The next morning, 4th December, he was having a bloody diarrhea. We immediately took him to hospital. He was admitted in Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun for treatment.
